Projects

Ian loves to do DIY projects and has collected the tools to do most construction and woodworking jobs.  In 2003 we found a design flaw in the house that had been allowing rain water to run from the roof under some flashing and down inside an outside wall. The result was that after 15 years the wall had rotted badly and had to be replaced. Ian and Beti took out the window, demolished the wall and rebuilt it and refinished the outside in just 4 days. Below are a sequence of shots taken during the demolition and reconstruction.

The extent of the rot was large

Water ran down flashing in this corner

The wall is part of the dining room

All the rotten wood removed

Other projects this year have been to move the lawn irrigation controls from the far end of the basement which is down a flight of stairs and over 100 feet from the door into the yard, to a wall near the front of the garage. Since our sprinklers have three control panels with 12 individually controlled watering zones, this involved routing over a mile of wiring through the basement, and across the garage. You can imagine how long it took to sort it all out. But the result is well worth it since we no longer have to use radios to coordinate adjusting the sprinklers.
